2025年10月15日早上六点半多，收到新华社加德满都分社前首席记者周盛平社长的信息，听说王宏纬教授三天前去世了，让我确认一下。上午有四节课，在课间九点半给中国南亚学会秘书长、中国社会科学院亚太与全球战略研究院吴兆礼老师留言询问，吴老师告知王宏纬老师已经去世了，并发来了下面的讣告。我第一时间转发至尼泊尔研究和南亚研究的学者群。上课期间还收到尼泊尔朋友询问王宏纬教授情况的信息。现将讣告译为英文，并将自己了解的王宏纬老师的其他情况作为补充附后，以此深切缅怀南亚学界前辈、尼泊尔研究泰斗王宏纬教授。
Editorial Note
At 6:30 a.m. on October 15, 2025, I received a message from Mr. Zhou Shengping, former Chief Correspondent (Director) of Xinhua News Agency's Kathmandu Bureau, who told me that he had heard Professor Wang Hongwei passed away three days earlier and asked me to confirm the news.
As I had four classes in the morning, during the break between classes I left a message to Prof. Wu Zhaoli—Secretary-General of the China Society for South Asian Studies and a faculty member of the Institute of Asia-Pacific and Global Strategy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, inquiring about any recent updates on Professor Wang Hongwei. Prof. Wu Zhaoli confirmed that Professor Wang Hongwei had indeed passed away and sent me the obituary attached below.
I immediately forwarded the obituary to academic groups dedicated to Nepal studies and South Asian studies. During my classes, I also received messages from friends in Nepal asking about Professor Wang Hongwei's situation.
Now, I have translated the obituary into English and appended additional information about Professor Wang Hongwei that I am aware of, as a profound tribute to Professor Wang Hongwei— a senior scholar in the field of South Asian studies and a towering figure in Nepal studies.

不幸于2025年10月10日凌晨5时许因病在北京逝世，享年91岁。
王宏纬先生1934年4月9日出生于山西省万荣县。1955年7月毕业于北京大学东方语言文学系，随后在中国作家协会
从事涉外工作。1959年被保送到国际关系学院（今外交学院）二部进修。1961年被派往科伦坡亚非作家常设局工作。
1963年，随中国观察员出席尼泊尔第二届全国文学艺术代表大会。
1978年进入中国社会科学院，从事南亚问题尤其是尼泊尔问题及中印关系研究，是尼泊尔研究领域公认的杰出学者。
他在中国社会科学院近半个世纪的研究工作期间，始终保持勤勉、严谨、求真、务实的学风，在专业研究领域笔耕不辍，著述甚丰。他十分注重田野工作，多次前往尼泊尔实地考察，与诸多方面的人士和学者进行深入交流。他还访问过印度、巴基斯坦以及美、英、法等国。1992年起获得国务院颁发的政府特殊津贴。
王宏纬先生谦虚谨慎，平易近人，成就卓著，是一位令人尊崇和怀念的资深学者。他的一些主要著述如《高山王国尼泊尔》《喜马拉雅山情结——中印关系研究》《中印边界秘史》（译著）《尼泊尔——人民和文化》列国志之一《尼泊尔》
《来自喜马拉雅山南麓的报告》《当代中印关系述评》（中文与英文双版）（英文版书名为A Critical Review of the Contemporary Sino-Indian Relations），在国内外都产生了良好影响。
遵照逝者遗嘱和家属意愿，王宏纬先生的丧事从简，不举行遗体告别仪式。

In Memoriam - Prof. Wang Hongwei 1934-2025
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Mr. Wang Hongwei, a distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of Asia-Pacific and Global Strategy of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Professor at the CASS Graduate School, and Consultant to the China Society for South Asian Studies. Prof. Wang Hongwei passed away in Beijing at 5:00 a.m. on October 10, 2025, at the age of 91.
Born in Wanrong County, Shanxi Province, China, on April 9, 1934, Prof. Wang Hongwei dedicated his life to scholarship and international understanding. After graduating from the Department of Oriental Languages and Cultures at Peking University in 1955, he began his career in foreign affairs at the Chinese Writers Association. His formative years included advanced studies at the Institute of International Relations and a pivotal posting to the Permanent Bureau of Afro-Asian Writers in Colombo in 1961, experiences that profoundly shaped his future academic focus.
In 1978, Prof. Wang Hongwei joined the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, where he would become a towering figure in the study of South Asia. Widely acclaimed as a leading authority on Nepal, his nearly half-century at CASS was defined by a diligent, rigorous, and pragmatic approach to research. He was a staunch advocate for fieldwork, undertaking numerous research trips to Nepal and engaging deeply with people from all walks of life and fellow academics across India, Pakistan, the United States, and Europe. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was awarded the Special Government Allowance of the State Council in 1992.
Beyond his academic achievements, Prof. Wang Hongwei was a mentor and friend to many. Known for his remarkable humility, integrity, and approachable nature, he was a deeply respected and beloved senior scholar. His extensive body of work, including seminal books such as Nepal: The Himalayan Kingdom(《高山王国尼泊尔》), The Himalayan Complex: A Study of China-India Relations(《喜马拉雅山情结——中印关系研究》), The Secret History of the China-India Border (translated work)(《中印边界秘史》（译著）), Nepal: People and Culture (《尼泊尔——人民和文化》) , Nepal (one of the "Countries of the World" series)( 列国志之一《尼泊尔》), Reports from the Southern Foot of the Himalayas (《来自喜马拉雅山南麓的报告》)and A Review of Contemporary China-India Relations(published in both Chinese and English versions)(《当代中印关系述评》（中文与英文版）), has had a significant and lasting impact both in China and internationally.
In accordance with his wishes and those of his family, the funeral will be a private affair. A public memorial service will not be held.
Prof. Wang Hongwei’s noble character and scholarly spirit, as lofty as mountains and as enduring as rivers, will forever inspire us. May he rest in eternal peace！

缅怀王宏纬教授
我2010年8月前往尼泊尔加德满都大学孔子学院工作之前，阅读尼泊尔的相关资料在著作和文章里初识王宏纬教授。离任回国后，适逢国家提出“一带一路”倡议，教育部要求国内承办孔子学院的高校建立相应国家的国别研究机构。为服务国家需要，河北经贸大学决定成立国内首家关于尼泊尔的国别研究机构河北经贸大学尼泊尔研究中心。2014年7月16日，尼泊尔驻华大使马赫士·马斯基（Mahesh Maskey）博士与河北经贸大学校长纪良纲教授为研究中心揭牌。之后研究中心购买了不少图书资料，把能买到的王宏纬教授的著作都买了。

第一次见到王宏纬教授，是2015年12月2日在尼泊尔驻华大使馆举办的由他主编的新版列国志《尼泊尔》的发行仪式上。虽是未曾谋面，却一见如故，相谈甚欢。后来王宏纬教授还到我住的酒店，深入交谈尼泊尔研究，令我顿觉如沐春风，受益良多，感佩不已。后来在尼泊尔驻华使馆举办的各种活动几乎都能见到他。
2017 年，王宏纬教授已经83岁高龄，还出版了与人合作翻译的美国加州大学伯克利分校教授里奥・尤金・罗斯（Leo Eugene Rose，1926-2005）的著作《尼泊尔的生存战略》（Nepal Strategy for Survival）。罗斯教授是南亚研究领域最杰出的学者之一。

最近一次见到王宏纬教授是2023年3月18日在尼泊尔使馆举行的学术活动上，尼泊尔驻华大使比湿努·普卡尔·施雷斯塔(Bishnu Pukar Shrestha)向他颁发尼泊尔国家最高学术机构尼泊尔学院(Nepal Academy)授予的“尼泊尔智庄严奖”（Nepal Pragyalankar Samman) 及奖金。据尼泊尔媒体报道，该年度的“尼泊尔智庄严奖”授予王宏纬教授是尼泊尔学院在其第35届学术大会上做出的决定。这是一个国际荣誉奖项，旨在表彰和感谢外国学者对尼泊尔相关研究和文化传播所做出的努力，并促进尼泊尔与世界的学术文化交流，是专门为外国人士设立的最高奖项。这类似于中国的“中国政府友谊奖”，是授予外国专家的最高荣誉。
王宏纬教授还惠赠2019年出版的自传著作《莫让年华虚度》，认真拜读后受益匪浅。
今年9月20日在尼泊尔驻华大使馆参加《尼中友谊七十载》图书发行仪式，未能见到王宏纬教授，问了与会的两位在京的老师，也没有得到他的信息。不料今天一早，就传来先生不幸去世的消息。

Before I went to work at the Confucius Institute of Kathmandu University in Nepal in August 2010, I first got to know Professor Wang Hongwei through his works and articles while reading materials related to Nepal. After the establishment of the Nepal Study Center at Hebei University of Economics and Business (HUEB), we purchased a large number of books and journals, including all available works by Professor Wang Hongwei.
I met Professor Wang Hongwei in person for the first time at the launch ceremony of the new edition of Nepal one of the "Countries of the World" series), which he edited, held at the Nepal Embassy in Beijing. I still remember that Professor Wang Hongwei later visited me at my hotel, and we had an in-depth conversation about Nepal studies. His insights made me feel deeply inspired—like being bathed in a spring breeze—and I was filled with admiration for his wisdom, gaining immense benefits from the discussion. Later, I would often see Professor Wang Hongwei at various events hosted by the Nepal Embassy.
In 2017 at the age of 83, he published a co-translated work Nepal Strategy for Survival(《尼泊尔生存战略》) by Mr. Leo Eugene Rose (1926-2005), a UC Berkeley professor and one of the most illustrious specialists on South Asia.
The last time I saw him was at an academic event held at the Nepal Embassy on March 18, 2023. At that event, H.E. Mr. Bishnu Pukar Shrestha, the then Nepalese Ambassador to China, conferred upon him the honorary title of "Nepal Pragyalankar" and a monetary award—both presented by Nepal Academy. Professor Wang Hongwei also kindly gave me a copy of his autobiography; after reading it, I gained profound knowledge and insights.
As far as I know, Prof. Wang Hongwei was also a visiting scholar at University of California, Berkeley, USA in 1985, and published a research paper titled “Sino-Nepal Relations in the 1980s” in Asian Survey, Vol. 25, No. 5, May, 1985.( citation:Hong-Wei, Wang. “Sino-Nepal Relations in the 1980s.” Asian Survey, vol. 25, no. 5, 1985, pp. 512–20.
