It was in the year 1971, after a gap of more than two decades of the establishment of the legitimate government of the People’s Republic of China, the lawful seat was restored in the United Nations, which was a momentous event in the annals of the United Nations. Resolution 2758 adopted by an overwhelming majority of the UN members at the 26th Session of the UNGA, had recognised the legitimate right of a country with more than one-fourth of the world population, which was a victory of not only the People’s Republic of China but also of all those who stood on the side of fairness and justice.
As we see today, the unparalleled role played by China, such as its firm commitments to strengthening the principles and purposes of the United Nations, its emphasis on the internationally accepted law-based system and the centrality of the United Nations, promotion of multilateralism, preservation of international peace and security, upliftment of the socio-economic status of the developing countries based on equity and openness of international entities, deserves the wholehearted appreciation of all of us. We, with all exuberance and jubilation, join hands with the government and the people of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in celebrating this year the 50th anniversary of the restoration of lawful seat to the PRC in the UN.
China’s 50 years in the United Nations demonstrate the prescience of resolution 2758, identifying it as an essential protector of the UN, its principles, and its purposes. Over the years, China, while endeavouring to rejuvenate the nation by eradicating absolute poverty in the process and attaining the goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, is now embarking on the journey to build a most advanced modern socialist society by the second centennial cycle of its mid-century goal.
China has unswervingly followed an independent foreign policy of peace and development, stood firm on the side of fairness and justice and has resolutely opposed hegemony and power politics, faithfully discharging its responsibilities as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
President Xi Jinping has called on all the countries to address the challenges that the world is facing now, by choosing ”cooperation over confrontation, openness over seclusion and mutual benefit over zero-sum games” and has urged all member nations to give full play to the UN’s central role in international affairs by opposing all forms of unilateralism and protectionism.
China’s successful drive to prevent and eliminate the surge of covid pandemic worldwide, engaging itself in science-based cooperation in origin tracing, and massive supply of vaccine and global healthcare, has remained unparalleled and admirable. On climate change, President Xi has stated that ‘it is nature’s alarm bell’; new ideas and a new model of cooperation are needed to address the challenge facing humanity. This vision is also expected to serve as an important prelude to the ongoing UN COP26.
President Xi, in his address to the UNGA this year, has also put forward a very outstanding and innovative proposal for setting up a ‘Global Development Initiative’, and has implored countries to work together to overcome the impact of Covid-19 on global development, accelerate the implementation of 2030 agenda for sustainable development, and build a global community of development with shared future for mankind.
Nepal ardently wishes that China would continue to play a vital role, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, in the promotion of fairness and Justice, contributing as a defender of international peace, development and security, and enhancing multilateralism under the UN auspices.
Nepal as China’s close and intimate friend and next-door neighbour wishes uninterrupted progress and prosperity to China and its people, wish them further success in its process of rejuvenation as per its forthcoming mid-century goal.
